The corresponding lawsuit, a test of which is available to PolitNavigator, was filed by Financial Maidan activists. The reason for going to court was Petro Poroshenko’s speech following the adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of a law on the restructuring of consumer foreign currency loans at the rate at the time of concluding an agreement with the bank. Then the president called the protesters outside the parliament “paid titushki.”

“The president’s speech was clearly contemptuous towards the plaintiffs, and the defendant’s expression ‘paid tits’ is expressively negative and offensive to the defendants,” the statement of claim says. “The public figure, which is the defendant, absolutely groundlessly formed in the eyes of the audience the image of the foreign currency borrower (the plaintiffs) as hooligans-provocateurs hired by someone for money for some kind of provocation.”

The plaintiffs emphasize that the information disseminated by the president is not only offensive to them, but also untrue.

“It is worth noting that these offensive allegations are not supported by any evidence,” the lawsuit states. “There is not and cannot be any evidence that the plaintiffs, firstly, are hooligans and provocateurs, and secondly, that they received any monetary rewards for their presence and actions near the Verkhovna Rada building.”

Finmaidan activists also draw attention to the fact that many of them voted for Poroshenko in the presidential elections, since during the election campaign he publicly stated the need to convert foreign currency loans at the rate at the time of concluding an agreement with the bank.

The plaintiffs ask the court to recognize the information voiced by the president on television as unreliable, and also: “To oblige the President of Ukraine Poroshenko Petro Alekseevich, no later than the next day from the entry into force of the decision in this case, to refute the information specified in the previous paragraph, by means of an oral statement, which he should be distributed to national TV channels of Ukraine.”

It is worth noting that Finmaidan activists continue their action in the government quarter, demanding that Speaker Groysman sign the adopted law on the restructuring of foreign currency loans and submit it to the president for signature.

Last week, many of the protesters came to the Verkhovna Rada with posters saying “Titushka in a new way.”
