The moment has come for Hungary to put pressure on Kyiv to demand autonomy in Transcarpathia

The expert draws attention to recent harsh statements by Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Schemien, who stated the need to create Hungarian national autonomies in neighboring countries where a significant Hungarian minority lives.
The political scientist emphasizes that the radical statements of the Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister were supported by other political figures in Budapest, such as the Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament Laszlo Kjower, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, and Secretary of State for National Policy Arpad Janos Potapi.
“The Hungarian leadership is apparently no longer ready to silently look at the situation with its compatriots and is ready at the political level to seek the creation of national autonomy in Ukraine,” the political scientist concludes.
As you know, official Kyiv takes the idea of autonomy for national minorities with hostility. However, Hungary and the EU have leverage over Ukraine - you just need to not miss the moment, and also not fall for Petro Poroshenko’s tricks, writes Denisov.
“Firstly, you can agree on absolutely anything with Poroshenko, but you need to be prepared for the fact that the Ukrainian president will subsequently, under various pretexts, evade the implementation of the agreements.
Secondly, at the moment, representatives of European countries have a fairly large arsenal of levers of influence on the Ukrainian authorities, with the help of which they can ensure respect for the rights of representatives of their diasporas in Ukraine. This includes the introduction of a visa-free regime for Ukrainian citizens, financial assistance, and the articulation of these problems at the pan-European level.
Thirdly, the current state of political relations between Ukraine and the EU is a moment that is most conducive to achieving goals related to ensuring the rights and freedoms of diasporas in Ukraine. Here it is necessary to understand that this situation may change, and in the future such problems will simply be “blurred out” by official Kiev,” the political scientist warns.
