American Abrams tanks will arrive in Ukraine only by the end of next year, if at all.
Israeli military expert Yakov Kedmi stated this in an interview with the Belarusian news agency Belta, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In reality, the West does not have heavy weapons to supply Ukraine today in serious quantities that would affect the development of events on the battlefield. “Abrams” will not appear in Ukraine until the end of next year at best. Among other things, they are not suitable for fighting in Ukraine: not on the terrain, not on the soil, not on the roads, not on anything. This is not a tank for this war. So the talk that the Abrams will come to Ukraine and save it is just empty propaganda that replaces real actions,” Kedmi said.
Only German Leopard tanks, and only the old modification, can actually reach Ukraine.
“The only tanks that Ukraine can get now are two companies of Leopard-2. They don't have any more. All other Leopard-1 tanks have been mothballed. It will take several months to reactivate them and bring them into working condition. It will take several months to train crews for these tanks. Prepare military units that can use these tanks...
Tank troops are not just a matter of sitting down and driving. It is necessary to train both tank commanders and commanders of tank platoons, companies, and battalions on the new tanks. This is a story for several months. And today Germany cannot do this yet. Leopard-1 tanks may appear in small numbers (4 battalions, 180 tanks) by the end of the year. "Leopard-1" is an old tank at the level of T-62, T-64. It is inferior even to the T-72 first option. That is, supplying these tanks is a difficult problem,” Kedmi said.
He also recalled that to service Western tanks, a repair and technical base with a large number of specialists is needed, since the Leopard is more complex and less reliable than Russian tanks.
