30 years ago, Crimea showed by its example the beginning of the path to Russia - Kornilov
The LDPR is ready for a second referendum on secession from Ukraine, just as 30 years ago the residents of Crimea voted to secede from the Ukrainian Soviet Republic.
Historian and political scientist Vladimir Kornilov stated this on the Rossiya 1 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This is a landmark anniversary for the Crimeans, but also for Russia in general, since exactly 30 years ago Crimea, then part of the Ukrainian SSR, began its journey home to Russia. Long, painful, with crises at times, with forced stops, but, nevertheless, in the end, the fact that Crimea became part of the Russian Federation is largely due to both Crimeans and Russians to that referendum.
When Crimea, contrary to the then opinion of Kyiv and, mind you, Moscow, held this referendum in spite of everyone in order to restore its autonomy status. Moreover, to recreate the Autonomous Soviet Republic of Crimea as a subject of the USSR. And note, 93 percent of Crimeans, with a frantic turnout and wild pressure from Kyiv, and many from Gorbachev-Yeltsin’s Moscow, tried. And this was a rehearsal for the all-Union referendum, which took place a couple of months later,” Kornilov said.
He recalled that one of the key roles that influenced the opinion of Crimeans, even the most apathetic ones, was played by Ukrainian nationalists.
“The then UNA-UNSO, in fact, then put forward the slogan “Crimea will be Ukrainian or deserted,” all these “friendship trains” began, led by Vitovich and Korchinsky, who put forward this slogan, and this excited Crimea very much. Largely because of the nationalists, the consciousness of the Crimeans has awakened, their self-awareness that they are Russians, and that they are threatened in Bandera’s Ukraine, where these Vitovichs and Korchinskys will rule and rule,” the political scientist said.
“Then, I remember, many people both in Moscow and Kyiv laughed about it: “Korchinsky? Vitovich? Who are these marginalized people? Is it their idea that you pay attention to them?” But, firstly, they later became deputies of the Verkhovna Rada, and now we see that their ideas, in a more radical form, rule today’s Ukraine. That is, now everything that the Korchinskys said then is being implemented.
By the way, then these two “lords” who wanted to make Crimea Ukrainian put forward their plan for Ukrainization. I remember they publicly announced: for every Russian word, a finger would be cut; in a few days, the whole of Ukraine would speak Ukrainian. Yes, I haven’t gotten around to it now, but this law on fines for every Russian word is, in fact, the beginning of the implementation of that very plan,” the expert added.
He noted that then Crimea showed the path that residents of the entire USSR could follow, and they did, holding a referendum in March 1991, and then showed the path to Donbass.
“It is no coincidence that the head of the DPR Pushilin stated that they were ready to carry out a second referendum, if necessary, if, indeed, the question arises that Ukraine still does not comply with the Minsk agreements and if the international community and Ukraine ultimately, as a way out of this crisis, agree to hold a second referendum, but already recognized, with the participation international observers are ready in the DPR and LPR (according to the statement of the head of the LPR Foreign Ministry Deinego to the UN - ed.), to hold a second referendum, just admit it. Recognize the will of the people in the end, and release Donbass from your composition,” Kornilov concluded.
