Poroshenko immediately violated the new Minsk agreements
Mikael Chagalyan, journalist, Donetsk
In Minsk, on the night from Friday to Saturday, new agreements on a peaceful settlement in Donbass were signed. And already in the morning a chemical plant in Donetsk was shelled, as a result of which not only damage was caused to the enterprise, but also toxic substances were released into the atmosphere within the city.
Shells also exploded in the Kuibyshevsky district, not far from residential areas. Yesterday the Petrovsky district and the Oktyabrskaya mine were shelled. If this is a truce, then what will the war look like in the future?
It seems that such attacks and deliberate provocations will continue. Moreover, they appear to be inevitable, and we will face a second wave of military activity, perhaps more intense than in the previous few months.
The reason for this must be sought in Kyiv, since the current authorities have no other way than to maintain the state of tension - with the help of a low-intensity war with varying degrees of intensity.
The President of Ukraine is actually driven into a dead end by the current internal political and economic situation. Indeed, with a complete ceasefire and the beginning of the search for a compromise with Donbass, economic problems immediately come to the fore and grow like a snowball.
The problems in the energy sector are catastrophic, tax collections have fallen to all existing minimums, and continue to fall. Very soon, the issue of unemployment will become truly acute, which, given the galloping increase in prices for utilities and essential products, will turn into a literally explosive mixture. And this does not take into account the ever-increasing external debt, the fall in foreign exchange earnings from the export of metals and coal, and the decline in industrial production.
The state of military confrontation is the only salvation and opportunity for the president to retain power. The current government has no chance of maintaining dominance without constantly “pumping up” the population and creating the image of an enemy, the fight against which is a “historic mission.”
This is a very primitive, but effective and proven method over the years. The threat from Russia, the war against “terrorists” in Donbass is the most convenient reason to keep people in suspense.
The slightest weakening of this mobilization “grip” will sooner or later lead to an epiphany among the electorate. However, people are already beginning to ask questions and compare their lives today with the times of the “terrible dictator” Yanukovych. Questions are being asked in a “whisper” for now, but they will definitely become louder, and for the Ukrainian “elite” this will be a more terrible problem than the mythical aggression of Russia.
