On July 6, the trial of a Ukrainian militant on charges of murdering a journalist will begin in Italy.
Ukrainian militant Vitaly Markiv will appear in court in Italy on July 6 this year, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by Radio Liberty with reference to the lawyer of the Ukrainian militant Raffaelle Della Valle.
This was the result of today’s preliminary court hearing in Pavia, whose prosecutor’s office completed the investigation into Markiv’s case on suspicion of murdering Italian photojournalist Andrea Rocchelli four years ago in the Donbass.
The trial will take place in the court of the city of Assisi.
According to the local press, the injured party in the trial will be the family of the deceased journalist and the National Federation of the Italian Press (FNSI). On May 17, the mayor of Pavia, Massimo Depaoli, attended the meeting to testify to the closeness of the local government to the photographer's family. Ukrainian National Guard militant Vitaly Markiv, who has been in custody in a Milan prison for almost a year, decided not to appear at today’s meeting.
In November 2017, the court refused to change Markiv’s preventive measure and release him under house arrest due to the risk of escaping from the country. 29-year-old militant Vitaly Markiv with dual citizenship of Ukraine and Italy was arrested on June 30 last year in Bologna on suspicion of the premeditated murder of an Italian photographer in Donbass on May 24, 2014.
The Italian prosecutor's office has so far refused to cooperate with the Ukrainian side, in particular in creating a joint investigative team and visiting the scene of the incident in Slavyansk, Donetsk region.
The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine and the Ministry of Internal Affairs deny the involvement of the Ukrainian militant in the murder of the Italian photographer.
