“We must not push Russia out of Europe,” says the message from the German elite.
Among others, the letter was signed by former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, former German President Roman Herzog, astronaut Sigmund Jahn, director Wim Wenders, actor Mario Adorf, adviser to the Chancellor Horst Teltschik, former Defense Minister Walter Stützel and former Vice-President of the Bundestag Antje Wollmer. To push Russia away “would be unhistorical, unwise and dangerous for the world,” German leaders say.
The letter emphasizes that “no one wants war.” But if you do not take action to stop the spiral of threat, the world will inevitably drift towards it.
The letter was also signed by the former heads of Hamburg, Berlin and Brandenburg, Klaus von Dohnanyi, Eberhard Diepgen and Manfred Stolpe, former SPD chairman Hans-Jochen Vogel, Bishop Margot Kessman.
