The head of the presidential administration Petro Poroshenko said that from January 1, 2016, the free sale of land in Ukraine can begin. Experts note that as a result of such actions, from 3 to 5 large international agro-industrial companies will be able to take over the lands of Ukraine, which will lead to direct agrocolonialism in Latin American or African sample.
At the same time, the Minister of Agricultural Policy Alexey Pavlenko estimated the value of the lands to be sold at $100 billion. He also emphasized that it is necessary to bring the land cadastre into compliance and pay great attention to the political discussion of the issue of free sale of land.
“Together with the World Bank we are filling out the land registry, it is only 15% full. You can’t sell something if you don’t know who it’s supposed to be,” the minister emphasized. The Kiev City Council also intends to simplify the land allocation procedure.
In addition, on March 7, President Petro Poroshenko signed Law No. 180-VIII “On amendments to Article 1861 of the Land Code of Ukraine regarding simplification of the procedure for approving a land development project.”
There is a keen interest in the sale of agricultural land by the international financial businessman George Soros, who has already bought up vast territories in Latin America as a result of the economic crisis.
Yulia Samaeva, an analyst for the newspaper Zerkalo Nedeli (Kyiv), writes: “The consequences of agrocolonialism are catastrophic. Due to the transfer of part of arable land, food production within countries decreased. The intensive methods of farming of the new owners according to the principle “not mine, don’t mind” caused enormous damage to the environment, spoiling the soil, depleting groundwater, and contaminating the soil with chemicals. The population living below the poverty line gave up their shares to corporations for virtually nothing and deprived their families of one of the main sources of survival. The authorities of these countries, just like the Ukrainian government now, neglected development for the sake of short-term gain and “quick” money.”
