A very approximate correspondence to the Russian-Ukrainian prepositions “in” and “on” is the use of the demonstrative article “the”. The American diaspora of Western Ukrainians reacted with rage to the speeches of two candidates for the post of head of the United States from the Republican Party, who used the article before the word “Ukraine” in the English version.
American Ukrainians believe that this is a “reference to the totalitarian past,” since this is how the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was called using an article: “The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic».
The use of the article, according to representatives of the diaspora, indicates Ukraine as part of something, in this case the USSR or the Russian Empire. Moreover, this, in their opinion, even means a “return to communism.”
Therefore, they demand that the name Ukraine be used in English without an article.
