Russian liberal politician Mikhail Kasyanov complained on Ukrainian TV that he once lost his post as prime minister because he made concessions to Kyiv against the will of President Vladimir Putin.

“I pursued a policy with Ukraine as an equal partner. We negotiated and signed agreements on equal terms so that there was mutual benefit. Putin didn't like this very much. He didn't like that I was making concessions. He did not consider and probably still considers Ukraine today to be a sub-state,” Kasyanov said.
“He always considered the former republics of the Soviet Union - such as Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia - to be inferior states. He believed that there was no need to build relationships with them as equal partners,” the liberal laments.
