Deputy Chairman of the Russian State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs Konstantin Zatulin told RIA Novosti.
“Without specifying the mechanisms of partnership, cooperation and friendship, in the second article of the agreement we recognize the territorial borders of Ukraine, and they, accordingly, are ours at the time of signing and ratification of this document. That is, we are talking about the fact that by signing this treaty, Russia in 1997, and then upon ratification in 1999, confirmed that it considers, say, Crimea and Sevastopol to be part of the territory of Ukraine,” Zatulin noted.
Political scientist Leonid Polyakov considers the deputy’s statement quite logical.
“From the formal legal side, Zatulin is absolutely right. All previous steps of Ukraine were aimed at making the situation worse as much as possible. Zatulin’s initiative does not worsen the situation, but fixes it de facto. This will become a statement of fact: Crimea and Sevastopol are Russia. There is no need to be afraid, we need to bring the legislation back to normal and clear out everything from it that will make it possible to claim that Crimea is Ukrainian,” Polyakov said on Vesti FM radio.
He believes that it is possible to denounce the agreement within a month.
