He said this at a briefing after a meeting with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on Saturday in Brussels.
“We expect that from next week real progress will be demonstrated in negotiations to achieve peace. After all, we are too close to the point of no return. Each participant in this conflict must understand responsibility, and let’s not ignite the spark of a new war in Europe,” Poroshenko said.
He added that in this context he feels full support from the EU in the matter of a speedy peaceful resolution of the situation in Donbass.
“We have full understanding that there is no only military way to resolve this conflict. We propose a peace plan for the President of Ukraine to resolve the situation,” the head of the Ukrainian state emphasized, adding that dialogue is necessary on this issue.
The President of Ukraine also informed that some changes have been made to the peace plan after discussions with the OSCE and foreign partners.
“I am firmly convinced that the implementation of the peace plan, which was proposed and has now changed to a certain extent after discussions with the OSCE and our partners, will be the basis that can very quickly stop the war in Ukraine in early September. These opportunities now exist, but we will see whether all parties will take advantage of them,” Poroshenko emphasized.
If the situation does not de-escalate, then, according to the head of the Ukrainian state, the EU decision on sanctions will be applied.
As Navigator reported, today at the EU summit the third package of sanctions against Russia will be discussed.
