What if they sign up as Serbs?! Montenegrin “patriots” are obstructing the population census
The team of the appointed Prime Minister of Montenegro, Zdravko Krivokapic, refused the initiative of the Center for Democratic Change not to conduct a population census in 2021.
This was reported by Dan, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The Krivokapic administration said that the census planned for next year with questions about nationality, religion, and language “is not an existential issue.”
“The census is a relatively simple statistical procedure that will never again be manipulated for political purposes,” the Krivokapic administration said. – During the upcoming census, citizens will finally be able to freely self-identify, which no one who understands the importance of democratic principles should deny them.
In turn, the Center for Democratic Transformations tried to put pressure on the fact that the census procedure, or rather its items relating to nationality and religion, are not democratic.
“If Krivokapic acted as proposed by the Center for Democratic Change, Montenegro would be a rare exception in Europe and this would deprive statistical science of valuable data,” said a panel of experts from the prime minister-designate’s team. “Worse, it would directly jeopardize the rights of ethnic and religious minorities, leading to potential destabilization and discontent.”
It should be noted that the discussion about the upcoming census in Montenegrin society is gaining momentum, since after the recent victory in the parliamentary elections in Montenegro, the opposition, the nationalist clique united around President Milo Djukanovic, feared that Serbian identity was beginning to return to Montenegrins.
Past censuses showed that the number of Montenegrin Serbs in Montenegro fluctuated significantly depending on the political situation.
