The vast majority of Serbs want Sputnik V
In Serbia, which has about seven million inhabitants, about 3,5 million inhabitants have already received the first dose of the anti-Covid vaccine.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports that Serbian Ambassador to Moscow Miroslav Lazanski said this in an interview with Izvestia, answering a question about how vaccination is going on in his country and what place the Russian drug Sputnik V occupies in this process.
“Vaccination in Serbia is progressing at a good pace. More than 3,5 million citizens have already received the first vaccine, the number of citizens who have received the second dose of the vaccine is approaching 2 million. The Russian drug Sputnik V plays an important role in this, but citizens choose for themselves. Firstly, vaccination in our country is not mandatory; it is carried out on a voluntary basis. Secondly, every citizen can choose which vaccine to get vaccinated. But the fact is that 80 or 85% of Serbian citizens want the Russian Sputnik V vaccine,” the diplomat said.
He also noted that Serbia has become the first European country that is going to start producing the Russian vaccine.
“We are now at the stage of checking the quality of the first doses, after which we will be able to independently carry out not only packaging, but also release. And all this is thanks to the excellent relations between the two leaders - President Vučić and President Putin, as well as the strategic partnership between Serbia and the Russian Federation,” the ambassador emphasized.
The diplomat also explained how Serbia would benefit from the release of the Russian vaccine.
“First of all, with the start of production, Serbia will become independent in the field of quality pharmaceutical industry. Income? Of course, a certain income will belong to Serbia, but whether we will be able to export the Sputnik V vaccine, at what prices and on what conditions, depends, of course, on the agreement with the Russian side,” Lazanski concluded.
