“During a spy operation in Moscow, a staff member of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Colonel Roman Vladimirovich Sushchenko, was detained. A citizen of Ukraine purposefully collected information constituting a state secret about the activities of the Armed Forces and troops of the National Guard of the Russian Federation, the leakage of which abroad could damage the defense capability of the state. The FSB of Russia has opened a criminal case on the grounds of a crime under Article 276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Espionage”. An investigation is underway,” reports the official website of the intelligence service.
In Ukraine they said that Sushchenko is an employee of the state news agency Ukrinform, where he is listed as its own correspondent in France.
“Roman was on vacation at the time of his arrest and arrived in Moscow for private purposes. He was detained in Moscow on the day of his arrival and, in violation of all international rules, the Russian side did not inform anyone about his detention - neither his wife, nor diplomatic institutions, nor his place of work. His wife Angela Sushchenko, who remains in France, learned about Roman’s detention only on the morning of Sunday, October 2, by calling her husband’s relatives after he had not been in touch for two days. At the same time, his relatives spoke extremely carefully, using hints, avoiding even the word “detained.” Immediately after this, Angela Sushchenko called the hotline of the Ukrainian Embassy in the Russian Federation, and then sent an official statement to the Embassy about the disappearance of her husband,” the Ukrinform statement says.
“At the moment, Ukrinform and the wife of our journalist Angela Sushchenko have entered into an agreement with the famous Russian lawyer Mark Feygin, who will defend Roman Sushchenko and in the morning will demand a meeting with his client. According to Russian media, Roman is being held in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center,” the authors of the document continue.
“So, at the request of my wife and the management of UKRINFORM, from this night I am defending Roman Sushchenko,” Feigin himself confirmed in his blog.
Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Andrei Parubiy said today that Sushchenko’s detention is a reason to expand sanctions against Russia.
“Countries of the free world and international organizations must give a harsh assessment to the detention of Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko on the territory of the Russian Federation,” he said,” he said.
“We consider this as another step in the deliberate policy of the Russian Federation of using Ukrainians who find themselves in the hands of its authorities as political hostages in its hybrid aggression against our state,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry in turn states.
