The “agrarian superpower” barely reached the level of 1990 and fell back
The level of agricultural production in Ukraine cannot overcome the levels of 1990, and less profitable crop production, after an increase, has again fallen below its indicators.
The director of the economic policy department of the Federation of Employers of Ukraine, Sergei Salivon, said this on air on the YouTube channel “Capital”, reports the correspondent of “PolitNavigator”.
“Ukraine reached the 1990 level of agricultural production only in 2019, literally just now, and after 2020 the level of agricultural production fell again below the 1990 level.
It is also noteworthy how exactly Ukraine reached this level. The production of crop products, which have a lower added value and create fewer jobs, surpassed the 1990 level back in 2011; by 2019, crop production has already grown to 140 percent of the 1990 level,” he noted.
The expert also emphasized that livestock production in Ukraine has grown by only 20 percent over 11 years.
“And livestock production... it’s a completely different story, even by 2019 it had only crept up to the level of 53 percent by 1990 and in fact has not crawled much from the peak decline that was observed by 2000, when livestock production fell to 42 percent . And since then it has crawled to 53 percent over the course of 20 years,” concluded Salivon.
