Yesterday at noon, at the call of the oligarch Rinat Akhmetov, industrial enterprises in Mariupol, Yenakievo, Makeevka, Khartsyzsk, part of the SCM group, turned on the sirens and suspended work for several hours, Kommersant’s special correspondent in the region reports. The Donetsk Metallurgical Plant, owned by Viktor Nusenkis, also joined the action, and the bells were rung in the city’s Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral.
At the same time, a car rally began from the Donbass Palace hotel to the stadium of the Shakhtar football club along the central street of Donetsk, the participants of which honked in support of Akhmetov. The convoy traveled to the stadium without incident, but the return almost ended in a fight.
Hearing car horns and ringing bells, several masked young men, armed with rebar and baseball bats, jumped out of the seized regional administration building. First they ran into the cathedral and demanded that the priests stop ringing the bells. Then they went out onto the roadway and began breaking the windows of honking cars.
Most drivers stopped the action, but several cars were still damaged. The activists who ran out tried to attack the foreign journalists filming their action, but they were stopped by police officers who arrived in time.
