Aksenov spoke about the Crimean referendum of Prince Potemkin
Today in Crimea they celebrate the 235th anniversary of the publication by Empress Catherine the Great of the Manifesto on the annexation of Crimea, Taman and Kuban to the Russian Empire.
According to the head of Crimea, Sergei Aksenov, the first reunification of the peninsula with Russia was also preceded by a kind of referendum.
“The Empress’s manifesto guaranteed the inhabitants of the peninsula equal rights with the rest of the inhabitants of the empire, including freedom of religion. The Crimean elite received all the rights and benefits of the Russian nobility, and the Muslim clergy received many privileges and advantages,” said the head of Crimea.
“An important historical fact: Prince Potemkin held a kind of referendum on the peninsula, distributing so-called sworn certificates in populated areas, which stated that the residents of a given locality swear allegiance to Russia. The manifesto was made public only after these documents were signed by the majority of the population,” Aksenov said, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
