Aksyonov knew that Kherson had to be taken - otherwise Crimea would be without water
The head of the Republic of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, was confident in the spring of 2014 of the need to reunite with Russia not only Crimea and Donbass, but also Kherson, on which the peninsula’s water supply depends.
This was stated on the YouTube channel of lawyer Ivan Mironov by the former Minister of Defense of the DPR Igor Strelkov, Aksyonov’s security adviser, in the spring of 2014, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Aksyonov understood perfectly well that without Kherson Crimea would dry up. We discussed this for a long time. Therefore, I actively used his support,” said Strelkov, recalling the beginning of the detachment’s campaign in Donbass.
It is interesting that Strelkov considers his most serious merit during the return of Crimea to the Russian Federation to be the transition of the commander of the Ukrainian Navy to the side of Russia.
“The only thing I have as a serious asset is the recruitment of the commander of the Black Sea Fleet (commander of the Ukrainian Naval Forces, during the return of Crimea in 2014 - approx. ed.). Committed on my own initiative, and two senior officers of the Ukrainian Fleet headquarters, with whom I contacted earlier, and who said that this could be done.
And after a conversation with him, I convinced him to go to negotiations about switching to the Russian side. It took me about two hours to do this. But he didn’t switch right away - I also set him up with Aksyonov, they talked on the phone for a long time.
I was absolutely sincere and said what I thought at that time. I was sure that the Ukrainian operetta was ending, and he thought the same, and all thinking people at that time thought the same. And that Russian people should go over to Russia’s side,” Strelkov added.
