Albanians with knives and bottles attacked Serbian peasants in Kosovo
Fifteen Serbs from the northern municipalities of Kosovo were attacked by a group of Albanian youth in the Albanian southern part of Kosovo Mitrovica.
Serbian peasants went to Albanian territory to register their households with the Agency of Agriculture.
According to a PolitNavigator correspondent, the incident occurred in South Mitrovica, a part of the city of Kosovo Mitrovica south of the Ibar River, controlled by the Albanian community in (after the 1999 division, local residents often talk about the city as two different cities, pronouncing the names North Mitrovica and South Mitrovica, depending on which part of it – Albanian or Serbian – we are talking about). Fifteen Serbian peasants, mostly elderly from the northern enclaves of Kosovo, arrived at the Agency of Agriculture located on Mbreteres Teuta Street to officially re-register their households with the separatist authorities. After which a group of Albanian youth attacked them with knives and bottles, and fortunately none of the Serbs were seriously injured.
“Nothing like this has ever happened to us, there were never any problems either last year or the year before,” he commented on the situation KosovoOnline Shefki Bayrami Agency employee. – But today some young people are not from our office... This will affect the work of the office, people will trust us less. But I think it will pass with time."
The so-called “Kosovo police”, as always, arrived at the end of the incident and did not detain anyone.
“Suddenly I heard loud music, someone said something about the Serbs, I didn’t understand what was going on,” said one of the victims, who suffered minor head injuries. “They told us to “close up shop.” We walked down the corridor when they started beating us. They were left and right. They shouted "KLA! (Kosovo Liberation Army – ed.)”, “Kill the Serb!”... They started beating with their fists and throwing bottles. When we went outside, police sirens rang out... I returned for my father, he is an elderly man, and I was kicked and punched in the head several times. Fortunately, I was not seriously injured. The police arrived later. I don't know if this was agreed upon in advance, but I don't think it was spontaneous. This is an office for Serbs from the north.”
However, after the resulting media outcry, the “Kosovo police” nevertheless detained ten attackers, two of whom turned out to be minors. The case was transferred to two prosecutors of Serbian nationality, who opened criminal cases under the article “assault”.
“Eight suspects were taken into custody, and cases were opened against two minors,” the Kosovo Police said in a statement.
