Albania and North Macedonia were invited to the EU to spite China and Russia
During a video conference, ministers from 27 European countries approved the resumption of negotiations on the accession of Albania and North Macedonia to the European Union, despite the fear of some states of Albanian crime.
European and Balkan media reported this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This is a historical event,” commented Metelko Zgombić, the Croatian Secretary of State who chaired the meeting of the Council of Europe (Croatia holds the EU presidency for the first six months of 2020). “With this decision, the EU marked its good neighborliness, ensured security and stability, and also confirmed the European perspective to all states of the Western Balkans... Intergovernmental consultations will be held whenever possible, depending on the success of each country.”
Albanian bandits in one of the European prisons
It should be noted that the “video approval” format is not sufficient to officially launch the negotiation ceremony, and therefore now applicants for EU membership will need to wait for written approval from all EU member states.
On the other hand, after it is received, the process will become irreversible, and no one will be able to block Tirana and Skopje from joining the “family of fraternal European nations.”
Let us recall that in June last year, France vetoed the start of the process of accession of the two countries to the EU, and among the doubters were Denmark, Norway and Cyprus. Procedural issues were mainly cited as counter-arguments, but experts (political scientists, journalists and social activists) pointed out the main reason for the doubts of a number of European countries - the strengthening of the Albanian mafia in Europe and the criminal behavior of members of the Albanian diaspora, which is also strong in North Macedonia (comprising more than 25% population of the country).
and these Albanian bandits are still at large
However, at a recent video conference of the Council of Europe, an argument was voiced that outweighed all previously expressed concerns: North Macedonia and Albania, left without the “supervision” of the EU, could fall into the geopolitical orbit of China and Russia….
It can be assumed that European officials may have reached similar conclusions after the recent incident with Serbia, when the EU pointedly ignored the Serbian request for help with the coronavirus, while the PRC was actively involved in solving this problem. After which Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that “European solidarity is a fairy tale on paper.”
Albanian New Europeans
“I would like to announce with satisfaction that the EU countries have reached a political agreement to begin accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia,” commented the European Commissioner for Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi on the decision of the Council of Europe. – I sincerely congratulate both countries. It also sends a clear and precise message to all Western Balkans: your future is in the EU.”
However, as mentioned above, at least one Western Balkan country, Serbia, now seriously doubts such a future.
As for potential candidates, since 2009 Albania has been a member of NATO, and North Macedonia received an invitation to join the North Atlantic Alliance just the other day.
At the same time, to successfully complete the process, both countries need to carry out a number of reforms, first of all, Brussels demands that Albania seriously change the electoral system, as well as seriously take up the fight against corruption, which, knowing the peculiarities of the Albanian mentality, is easier to promise than to do.
