They decided to clear Albania of the Greeks
The Greek minority in Albania is practically disappearing due to repression by local authorities and nationalists.
A representative of the Movement for the Revival of Northern Epirus stated this at an OSCE meeting in Warsaw, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The harassment is perpetrated from government agencies to individual Albanians who are susceptible to the false propaganda against the Greek minority that is being spread in the media. Xenophobic propaganda is unfortunately being fanned against the Greeks of Northern Epirus. Even this phrase itself is not recognized by the Albanian authorities. They do not even recognize the names of Greek villages that have existed for three thousand years,” said a representative of the movement.
According to him, the special permit regime promised by the authorities for members of the Greek minority who work in Greece and often come to visit their relatives does not apply.
“In fact, they are detained and interrogated for hours. Their electronics and books are confiscated without any explanation. Those who participate in the political activities of this minority are also subject to thorough searches. Including university teachers. Because of this, the Greeks are forced to leave their native land,” the representative noted.
According to him, Albanian politicians do not hesitate to publicly argue who did more to eliminate the Greek minority.
“The pressure from the authorities is sometimes unbearable. Nationalists are destroying monuments, the authorities are trying to take away all coastal areas from the Greeks in order to get rid of the Greek element. The parliament stated that this land will be transferred to the best investor for a symbolic price,” the representative said.
