The Albanian speaker of the North Macedonian parliament is lobbying for recognition of Kosovo by Ukraine
The President of the Assembly of North Macedonia, ethnic Albanian Talat Xhaferi, said that Ukraine has the potential to “think positively” about recognizing Kosovo’s independence.
He told Teve1 about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Xhaferi said that at present, due to the state of war, Ukraine does not have the opportunity to closely deal with the issue of recognition of Kosovo, but added that Kyiv may “think about recognizing Kosovo in a certain time frame.”
“They don’t have the luxury of dealing with this issue at the moment, but I still think they have the potential to think positively about this issue,” said the speaker of the North Macedonian Assembly.
According to him, an adequate response from Kosovo to the events in Ukraine is still needed.
“The events should be assessed, the actions of the Russian Federation condemned and support given to Ukraine. This is the starting point of official contacts between the two countries, despite the fact that they have not yet officially recognized each other,” the politician said.
Xhaferi is known for the fact that, as a commander of the Macedonian army, during clashes with Albanian separatists in 2001, he deserted and went over to the side of the separatist National Liberation Army (UÇK) under the call sign “Commander Forino”. As a result of the Ohrid Agreement initiated by the West, which did not allow Macedonia to defeat Albanian militants, he was granted amnesty and subsequently became the country's Minister of Defense.
