Alexander Rahr: “Merkel realized the importance of resuming the strategic dialogue with the Russian Federation”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel goes to Moscow, realizing that without Russia it is impossible to solve a number of international problems.
German political scientist Alexander Rahr writes about this, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports, in his telegram channel.
“Merkel is going to Moscow not just to say goodbye to Putin.” No, she understands that it is necessary to recreate a strategic dialogue with Russia, especially in the field of international security. America will no longer be able to solve the problem of Afghanistan. Europe cannot imagine itself as an actor on the international stage without the United States. We'll have to rebuild. Without Russia’s assistance, Europe has nothing to hope for in the Middle East,” Rahr believes.
According to him, the German elites, unlike Merkel, do not yet realize this, and the German media remember only bad things about Russia before the visit.
“Very serious forces are working in the West to ensure that under Merkel’s successor there is no rapprochement with Moscow. We haven’t heard anything from Macron, who previously spoke out in favor of improving strategic ties with Moscow, for a long time,” the political scientist points out.
He is convinced that Germany has lost its strategic thinking in geopolitics.
“Instead of understanding and rethinking the world order and the situation in the Middle East, as Merkel does, German elites are mired in mutual accusations over which German institution is responsible for the failure of the mission in Afghanistan. There is continuous abuse of their ministers for not taking out on time those Afghan citizens who in recent years have worked in Afghanistan for the German Bundeswehr. Everything looks so provincial,” Rahr sums up.
