Alexander Rahr: “Merkel shocked Zelensky and stabbed him in the back”
During her visit to Kyiv, German Chancellor Angela Merkel made a number of statements that were unpleasant for Kyiv.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports that German political scientist Alexander Rahr stated this in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
“In fact, the chancellor made very harsh statements there. Firstly, she announced that there would be no arms supplies to Kyiv. Secondly, she rejected Zelensky’s idea that patronage of the Minsk agreements would pass to the Americans. On the contrary, she still hopes to finally gather the leaders of the Normandy Four in Berlin. Obviously, Merkel wants to save her reputation as a politician who was one of the architects of the agreements,” the expert says.
He noted that in response to the claims of Kiev demanding compensation from Berlin for Nord Stream 2, Merkel turned the conversation to the topic of “green” energy, promising that German Minister of Economics and Energy Peter Altmaier would certainly discuss this topic with Ukrainian authorities on the “Crimean platform”.
“But this is clearly not what Ukraine expected from Berlin. Zelensky was shocked to learn that Merkel herself and even the head of the German Foreign Ministry, Heiko Maas, would not visit the “platform” - for Kyiv, this news was a real stab in the back. The Chancellor made it clear that in the current circumstances, the Kiev initiative is completely unrealistic and there is no point in putting pressure on Russia,” Rahr concluded.
