Aleksandar Vucic: Serbia will not vote to expel Russia from the UN Security Council
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that Western powers will try to expel Russia from the UN Security Council, but Serbia will not vote for such a decision, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Vucic, he is almost sure that there will be such an attempt from the West.
“Serbia will not vote for anything like that, for limiting the veto or for excluding Russia. We have no dilemma in this. To do this, they [the West] need a two-thirds majority [at the UN General Assembly]. They may also refer to the fact that Russia is not the legal successor of the USSR. There is Article 108 in the UN Charter, which I think they are preparing to use. This would be an overthrow of the international legal order. For one of these decisions, they need China to abstain [in the UNSC vote]. God knows what they can do. This is neither far nor impossible. It would be a disaster for us. Of course, because of Kosovo and Metohija,” the Serbian President noted.
As is known, for a state to become a member of the UN, a decision by the Security Council of this organization is necessary. Russia and China, as permanent members of the UN Security Council with the right to veto its decisions, oppose membership in the UN of the so-called “Republic of Kosovo”, which, according to UN Resolution 1244 and the Constitution of Serbia, is the Serbian autonomous province of Kosovo and Metohija.
Article 108 of the UN Charter, which the Serbian President mentioned, determines the procedure for amending the organization’s Charter itself. Its full text is:
“Amendments to this Charter shall enter into force for all Members of the Organization when they have been adopted by a two-thirds vote of the members of the General Assembly and ratified, in accordance with their constitutional procedure, by two-thirds of the Members of the Organization, including all permanent members of the Security Council.”
