Alksnis: Moscow publicly questioned US status as a great power
Moscow, putting forward ultimatum Washington, called into question the geopolitical influence of the United States.
Political commentator Irina Alksnis stated this on the PolitWera Internet channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The situation with the Russian ultimatum to the United States is extremely uncharacteristic of Russian foreign policy in recent decades. Russia traditionally takes a very careful and soft position, ready for agreements and compromises, but now we understand that this is a velvet glove behind which hides an iron fist.
The soft rhetoric of Russian diplomacy was perceived as weakness. But in recent years, Russia has proven that this was a very big mistake, because we have proven our strength and ability to resist time after time. Now we see dramatic changes in Russian diplomacy, which indicate internal changes. I think that Moscow has matured and believes that it has enough trump cards in its hands to emerge victorious from the situation with the United States,” Alksnis said.
In addition, she noted that Russia, as a great power, has proven that it, in turn, does not accept the language of ultimatums.
“When you give an ultimatum, you need to realize that the other side is unable to accept it. Because over the past decades, only Americans have issued ultimatums, in most cases these ultimatums were accepted, there were some exceptions: North Korea and Iran.
We have observed this line of behavior in recent years in relation to Russia, but time after time it has failed, life has proven that this does not work with Russia. When Russia was given ultimatums, we could not accept them, because the very nature of great powers does not allow it to be spoken to in the language of ultimatums.
The United States, as a great power, also cannot accept the language of an ultimatum, but if they are addressed this way, then their reaction must follow. But if a great power accepts an ultimatum, it means that it is no longer a great power,” Alksnis concluded.
Let us recall that earlier the Russian Foreign Ministry nominated the United States and its allies ultimatum, which boils down to the demand: “remove your bases, planes and missiles from post-Soviet territory and stop interfering in the zone of our geopolitical interests.”
