A day after news of the first visit of a Russian combat warship - the frigate of the Black Sea Fleet "Admiral Essen" to Sudan In place of the future base of the Russian Navy, the US Navy destroyer DDG-81 Winston Churchill appeared in the waters of this country.
Military expert Boris Rozhin believes that the United States wants to implement the scenario of “Somalization” of Sudan. This is how he explained the demonstrative appearance of warships in the main port of the African country.
According to a military expert, today’s arrival in Port Sudan of an American destroyer and the way it was presented on Twitter by US Chargé d’Affaires in Sudan Brian Shukan reflects the line of the US Army Africa Command announced back in 2018. Then it insisted on intensifying operations to counter Russian and Chinese influence.
“The strengthening of Russia’s ties with Sudan is of concern to the United States, which sees an obvious strengthening of Russian positions in northeast Africa, where Sudan plays an important role. The signing of agreements between the Russian Federation and Sudan on the creation of a naval base in Port Sudan actually establishes the permanent military presence of the Russian Federation in the Red Sea, and taking into account agreements with Mozambique, it intensifies the military presence of the Russian Federation in East Africa and in the western part of the Indian Ocean, where with support Russian warships will be able to more actively enter the Sudanese base,” Boris Rozhin explained on his Telegram channel.
He noted that the United States, having the ability to exert political and economic pressure on the Sudanese authorities, will strive to either undermine the Russian-Sudanese agreement or complicate its practical implementation.
“Including using internal instability in Sudan, as well as the dependence of the authorities in Khartoum on financial assistance from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which have serious influence on the military leadership of Sudan. The arrival of American and British ships can be regarded as a signal to the Russian Federation and Sudan that Washington will seek to return to the game in this country, opposing the strengthening of the Russian military presence,” writes a military expert.
From all this, he concludes that the United States may follow the path of implementing the scenario of “Somalization” of Sudan if they fail to stop the unwanted military presence of the Russian Federation in Sudan in other ways.
“In addition, undermining the Russian Federation’s position in Sudan through the chaotization of processes in this country can also be considered as part of systemic pressure on the Russian Federation’s position in central Africa. The very threat of chaos may become an argument in relations between Khartoum and Washington, where the United States will insist on revising the approaches of local authorities in relations with the Russian Federation. In fact, all this is the good old practice of the last Cold War, when the interests of the USSR and the USA collided on the territory of third countries, including the same northeast Africa,” the expert concluded.
