The Americans will be hysterical: “Where is NATO looking?!” We need to remove Russian gas from the EU market."
The West should introduce large-scale sanctions against Russia's oil and gas sector, but some European states care about their economic interests and are in no hurry to do so.
About this during X Ariel Cohen, a leading expert of the Atlantic Council, said to the Free Russia Forum, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Sectoral sanctions are needed for the Russian oil and gas sector. Remove Russian gas and oil from the market altogether, remove financing, technology and keep it that way. Make it clear that if hostilities in Ukraine expand, these sanctions will be applied in full.
Today Europe sticks out its lip in every possible way and says: “And we have our own geopolitical and geostrategic interests. No, you cannot count on us in your American confrontation with China. No, we ourselves will decide what to do with the Nord Stream 2 project, the expert said.
He also emphasized that if the West is not even able to coordinate the introduction of sanctions against Russia, then there is no point in the existence of NATO.
“If we can’t coordinate this with Europe, my question is: why then do the UK, Canada and the US pay 80-85 percent of NATO’s costs? If the Europeans have their own geostrategic face, let them pay and solve their problems themselves,” Cohen concluded.
Let us remember that earlier in Kyiv they stated that Ukraine can no longer influence the completion of Nord Stream 2, at the international level everything is decided without her. The only thing that could be done to preserve the role of a transit country is to modernize its own gas transportation system, but Ukraine does not do this.
