Thirty-five Afghan nationals who were in North Macedonia traveled to Greece, which granted them temporary asylum.
Previously, the Macedonian government temporarily housed Afghan refugees under Washington’s promise to eventually take them to the United States, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The group traveling to Greece consists of thirty-five Afghan citizens - human rights activists and members of their families.
“Our country has provided temporary asylum as part of a major international operation to assist employees of international humanitarian, democratic and peacekeeping missions - human rights defenders, translators, students, scholarship holders and their families who are under threat from the new Taliban regime in the country,” the government commented on the situation North Macedonia.
Today, there are still 407 Afghans remaining in the country, whose future is uncertain. At one time, the United States turned to the Balkan countries with a request to host Afghan collaborators with a promise to take them back after some time.
As a result, only Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia responded to the call. At the same time, Washington is in no hurry to take over the persons stationed in these countries, trying to settle them in Europe.
