The commander of the Estonian Air Force, Jaak Tarien, does not hide the fact that A10 attack aircraft will be stationed at the airbase, which is why huge C-5M Super Galaxy and Boeing 747-400F transport aircraft have been flying to Ämari all week. “They delivered equipment for an entire squadron here,” – the head of the Estonian Air Force shared with visitors to his Facebook page.
A total of twelve A10 attack aircraft will be delivered to Estonia; only a portion of them will be stationed at the base in Ämari. The location of the rest has not yet been disclosed.
Note that the Fairchild-Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft is a single-seat twin-engine attack aircraft designed to destroy tanks, armored vehicles and other ground targets (according to The Economist, the purpose of creating the A-10 was to destroy Soviet tank columns in the event of a USSR invasion of Europe).
As of 2012, the US Air National Guard operated 107 A-10 attack aircraft, so a ninth of them are being deployed to Estonia.
Joint exercises between Estonian and American military pilots will last until November 6. It is expected that in addition to aviation, artillery will also take part in them: at the central training ground of the Estonian Defense Forces near Tapa, firing will take place using training ammunition for airborne guns and training bombs.
Simultaneously with the announcement of the start of military exercises in Estonia, information also appeared that the United States would receive currently unused barracks in central Poland. The military complex in the city of Ciechanów, located 300 kilometers from the Russian-Polish border, will be used by the Polish and US military for tasks related to defense and national security, explains Deputy Polish Minister of Defense Beata Ozkowicz.
