NATO has converted the former Soviet training ground in Yavorov (Lviv region), and adapted it for training soldiers and officers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The training program for Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers is aimed at bringing the Ukrainian army into compliance with NATO standards.
In total, according to the publication, since 2015, about 6 thousand Ukrainians have been trained at the Yavorov training ground.
“In 2015, the Ukrainians asked for help, and the Canadians were the first to say yes,” says Maj. Jeff Day, deputy commander of the 2nd Canadian Mechanized Brigade.
He notes that Ukraine is facing a new type of hybrid warfare, and Canadians are ready to share their experience gained in Afghanistan. Military personnel from Lithuania and the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, UK also sometimes come.
“It’s never too late to learn, we have a long way to go to be on the same level as the Americans,” said 25-year-old Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman Sergei from the 72nd Mechanized Brigade.
He took part in the Battle of Debaltsevo in 2015.
On February 28, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Viktor Muzhenko, said that Ukrainian pilots should receive new opportunities to improve their survival skills from NATO experience. And on February 23, Muzhenko announced that Ukrainian officers with combat experience were being selected for training in NATO standards.
