Americans are confident that Ukraine will lose the referendum in Donbass
The initiative of Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Bloomberg, allegedly offering Donald Trump holding a referendum in Donbass under international control will not receive US support.
Pavel Rudyakov, director of the Perspektiva information and political center, stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Putin said in one of his speeches that some ideas on Ukraine were voiced, but they did not discuss them. As far as I understand, they only talked about some of the most general approaches, and we appeared there in 5th or 6th place. And among these new ideas, it is quite possible that the Russian side named a referendum, not even like in Crimea, something that the local authorities did, but under the auspices of Russia, but according to some international rules and norms,” suggests Rudyakov.
According to the expert, this idea is utopian, since “the Americans are confident that in any referendum, with any international observers, the Russian project, the Russian solution to the issue, will win, that is, the locals will vote against what Kiev is striving for in the Donbass.”
“Therefore, a referendum is unlikely. I think this is a provocative stuff. You need to check this information. It seems to me that it is impossible to organize a referendum because there is no international consensus, there is not even a Russian-American understanding on this issue. Although if we talk about a referendum as an instrument, then in this case, under certain circumstances, conditions, clarification of parameters, and so on, it is, if not preferable, then at least no less productive than this idea with peacekeepers in Donbass. A referendum, at least, is democratic,” the political scientist concluded.
