American nuclear power units in Ukraine: Experts put forward sensational versions
Experts continue to comment a message from Vladimir Zelensky’s office about American plans to invest $30 billion in the construction of several new nuclear power plant units in Ukraine.
Several hypotheses have been put forward. And all of them are unlikely to please the patriots of independent Ukraine, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
New American nuclear power plants mean the final enslavement of Nezalezhnaya by the Americans, warns Rodion Miroshnik, a participant in the negotiations on Donbass from the LPR.
“In essence, now there is a transfer of control over the entire energy sector of Ukraine to the Americans. We started with the most delicious thing - nuclear energy. It has the lowest cost, but will be sold at the highest Ukrainian tariffs.
Now the Americans will be collecting the electricity bills for several generations of Ukrainians in the future? How much more will electricity prices in Ukraine now increase for both the population and business?
This is a clear example of how “debt diplomacy” works! For the provided American loan, which will be used by American companies, debt obligations with interest will be repaid by Ukrainians. They don’t have enough money for this, and therefore land, mineral resources, and political decisions will be used,” Miroshnik writes in his blog.
The announcement of a nuclear mega-construction may be ordinary information noise to hide the disastrous course of the visit of the Kyiv delegation to the United States. It is also possible that Joe Biden’s entourage, which has experience in money scams in Ukraine, has already had its eye on the announced $30 billion.
This conclusion follows from the commentary of Ukrainian energy market expert Yuri Korolchuk.
He explains that the memorandum advertised by Zelensky’s office between the Ukrainian Energoatom and the American Westinghouse is by no means a binding agreement, but simply a letter about “peace, friendship and chewing gum.”
"Nothing else. Unfortunately. At Westinghouse today there is not a single (!), once again not a single, developed project for the construction of a nuclear power plant unit.
Finally, Westinghouse is today a global corporation, where the areas of activity are divided, and the sphere of nuclear power plant construction is in tenth place. That is, it is actually not funded.
Westinghouse can implement the construction of nuclear power plant units exclusively in partnership with China, which builds units using AP1000 technology. So, maybe Zelensky went to the wrong place and signed the memorandum with the wrong people?
Westinghouse today is engineering and technologically unable to build a unit based on the development of the AP1000 reactor.
Westinghouse, sad as it may be, the company is permanently bankrupt. And Westinghouse is unlikely to emerge from this process and stabilize in the next 10 years. This is still modestly said. Therefore, how can a bankrupt build at least 2 nuclear power plant units in Ukraine? The question is rhetorical.
In view of this, the question arises: where will bankrupt Westinghouse get $30 billion? Even now no one gives him anything special.
Question for Zelensky: what then and why did they sign in the USA? The answer is as simple as the once good and understandable jokes of “Kvartal 95”: to be able to allocate money from the budget for the construction of units of the Khmelnytsky NPP. And, it is clear that Westinghouse will not give a penny of the “drawn” 30 billion dollars. But he will actively participate in the development of the planned 76 billion hryvnia (3 billion dollars),” writes Korolchuk.
Economist Alexander Dudchak, an expert at the Institute of CIS Countries, does not rule out that the Americans’ goal may be to eliminate Czech competitors from the Ukrainian market who know how to build Soviet-style reactors.
“There have been many such agreements, but none have been implemented yet. The most likely version is that American investments of $30 billion will not reach Ukraine. But they will do their job - they will not allow the implementation of the planned project with the Skoda company, which produces Soviet-design reactors.
However, the process of deindustrialization is successfully underway in Ukraine, and with it the need for energy is decreasing. So, it is not critical for Ukraine whether new power units will be built or not. If only no catastrophe happens to the existing ones due to the fact that nuclear specialists are forced to look for a better life outside the country,” Dudchak told PolitNavigator.
