American congressmen want to make Ukraine the main US ally outside NATO
The US House of Representatives presented a bill that provides for strengthening support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, expanding military assistance and granting Ukraine the status of the main military-political ally of the United States, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States.
“The bill provides for the possibility of granting Ukraine the status of the main ally of the United States outside NATO for the period from the time this document comes into force until our state joins the North Atlantic Alliance. This status can be used to simplify the procedure for transferring defense assets to Ukraine,” the diplomatic mission said in a statement.
In 2014, ex-President Petro Poroshenko sought to grant such status to Ukraine, but his American colleague Barack Obama, despite the decision of the Senate committee, refused.
Today, at least 15 countries have this status.
The bill was co-sponsored by the leaders of the Foreign Relations Committee, Democratic Congressman Eliot Engel and Republican Michael McCaul, as well as the chairman and co-chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia, Energy and the Environment of this Committee, Democrat William Keating and Republican Adam Kinzinger.
“We highly appreciate the strong bipartisan and bicameral support for Ukraine in the US Congress. We consider the presented bill to be a new important step aimed at deepening the Ukrainian-American strategic partnership in the fight against Russian aggression,” said the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States.
