American sanctions will slow down, but will not stop the Russian gas pipeline
Europe still has too much interest in Russian gas, and therefore the completion of Nord Stream 2 will continue, despite the threat of American sanctions.
Aleksey Krichevsky, an expert at the Academy of Financial and Investment Management, told Moskovsky Komsomolets about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He calls not to rush to put an end to the gas pipeline, despite the growing US sanctions pressure.
“The maximum that the Trump and subsequently Biden administration can now achieve through economic threats to pipelayers and equipment suppliers is to slow down the commissioning of the gas pipeline for a year and a half. Europe has too much interest in Russian gas, and this will continue for the next 10–15 years until the moment when countries will be able to provide themselves with energy from renewable sources,” says the expert.
He considers it unlikely that the project will be permanently stopped.
“Most likely, interested states will have to again look for new contractors and pipe-layers, and in the meantime, replace Russian gas with American gas. This is precisely the main goal of sanctions against Nord Stream 2,” Krichevsky concluded.
