“The government of Ukraine is negotiating with the American company Textron System about retrofitting army Humvee SUVs supplied from the United States for the Ukrainian Armed Forces with armor sets,” the newspaper reports, citing the Defense One website. – According to US State Department licensing rules, the retrofit kit is not considered “lethal” equipment, and therefore there are no legal obstacles to the transaction. Let us recall that the White House has until now refused to satisfy Kyiv’s requests for the supply of weapons for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, limiting itself to “non-lethal” assistance, including artillery radars, communications equipment, and medicines. This list also includes Humvee SUVs, of which it was planned to supply up to 230 units.”
At the same time, the publication notes that the Americans actively used Humvees at the first stage of the campaign in Iraq and, due to SUV explosions on mines, lost over 2,5 thousand soldiers, after which the Pentagon allocated billions of dollars for the purchase of MRAP armored vehicles, which are more resistant to explosions have a V-shaped bottom, unlike the Humvee, which has a flat bottom.
“With this in mind, the main component of retrofitting the Humvee is the installation of a special V-shaped capsule on the bottom,” the publication emphasizes. “In addition, the engine and suspension elements are being improved, and more stable seats for the crew are being installed. According to the publication, the American company will only carry out deliveries, and the installation of the kits will be carried out by the Ukrainians themselves.”
By the way, American SUVs received negative reviews in the Ukrainian army.
“The expected result of Lend-Lease. There are no reserves. The tires are old, the cord has come in pieces from a short run, there are cracks,” RG quotes Ukrainian serviceman Oleg Movchan, who on his Facebook page told how Humvee deliveries turned out for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
