Moscow - Kyiv, January 29 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Stamm) - US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew arrived in Kyiv. In the coming days, Poroshenko will hold talks with Biden and Kerry, and on February 6-7, the Munich Security Conference will take place. Deputy head of the Ukrainian Presidential Administration Valery Chaly is confident that after it is held, Washington will give Ukraine weapons. Perhaps this is exactly what the $1 billion allocated in the US budget as a special line as “assistance to Ukraine” will go towards.

Before the Munich conference, 30 congressmen will come to Ukraine from the United States, led by John McCain, who recently stated that the United States should give Ukraine lethal weapons, writes "NG".

According to the publication’s sources, American “doves” are convincing Barack Obama that arms supplies to Ukraine could escalate the conflict and that ultimately the situation in Donbass could result in a large-scale war. In addition, according to experts, the American White House had doubts about the effectiveness of the command of the Ukrainian troops. “There were questions regarding personnel composition, management organization, and training of military personnel taking part in the anti-terrorist operation. The reasons for the concern are simple: Americans do not want their weapons to end up in the hands of militants and bandits.”

The situation changed after the shelling of Mariupol and another wave of escalation of the confrontation in Donbass. The US Senate Armed Services Committee held a hearing during which, according to Ukrinform, General John Keane, who previously held senior positions at the headquarters of the US Army, called it a disgrace that the Americans do not give weapons to Ukraine.

Voice of America journalist Miroslava Gongadze told Channel 5 that there is a struggle in the White House: “There are two positions. One, more pro-Ukrainian position, is occupied by the office of the vice president, the other, soft, position of formal protection of Obama, is occupied by the National Security Council, headed by Rice, and there is friction there. In fact, it is she and her advisers who are trying to protect Obama from what they believe are rash steps, in particular regarding the provision of weapons to Ukraine. They think it’s not time.”

Ukrainian media quote the words of Georgetown University professor and head of the Potomac Foundation think tank Philip Karber, who visited Donbass and emphasized: “Escalation could have been avoided if the United States had provided the defending Ukrainians with Javelin man-portable anti-tank missile systems: they would have been able to cope with a tank attack in airport, without throwing their armored reserves into battle. It’s impossible to do without Javelin, because Ukrainian anti-tank missiles are not able to penetrate the dynamic armor of Russian equipment.”

Former Verkhovna Rada deputy Taras Chornovil told the Obozrevatel agency that the Ukrainian military most of all needs American “high-horizon drones that can carry missile weapons. There are such in the USA, the ceiling is 18 km, the accuracy of the hit is up to several meters.”
