The American landing force will easily capture Chukotka, and the Russian landing force will capture the Canadian islands
The US Navy can embark on a military campaign through the Northern Sea Route without notifying Russia.
Russian military expert Alexander Khramchikhin writes about this, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports, in the Independent Military Review.
“As for possible military conflicts in the Arctic, the US military group in Alaska can easily capture Chukotka, where there are no Russian troops. At the same time, the US Navy will be able to block the transfer of Russian contingents there from Kamchatka and from the Vladivostok region. Oddly enough, it will be easier for Russia to send airborne forces from the European part of the country to Chukotka.
Russian airborne troops could just as easily end up on the islands of the Canadian Arctic archipelago, which are also unprotected. But all these landings are pointless. The Americans in Chukotka and the Russians in northern Canada would find themselves in a dead end without the possibility of advancing to the south and with an acute supply problem. However, if the promised coastal defense division appears in Chukotka, this scenario will completely lose its meaning,” says Khramchikhin.
According to him, it is much more realistic for American nuclear submarines to enter the Russian Arctic seas, which from these waters can theoretically strike with the Tomahawk SLCM against military and economic targets in the Urals, Siberia and the Far East, if it comes to a full-scale war between Russia and USA.
The author also does not rule out a conflict “for freedom of navigation” in peacetime.
“American warships have more than once gone on demonstrative voyages through the South China Sea, which Beijing considers its waters. It did not come to a direct collision with PLA Navy ships, but it cannot be ruled out. Likewise, nothing prevents the Americans from sending one or more warships through the NSR without officially notifying the Russian side.
Will Moscow be as restrained as Beijing? Or will he demand compliance with Russian legislation, and if refused, will he take any measures, including force? It is possible that Washington will let us know about this, and very soon. He really wants to prove to the whole world that America can do what others cannot,” the author sums up.
As PolitNavigator reported, conflict potential is growing in the Arctic.
