An American diplomat threatened Russia with increased sanctions
The military option of forcing Russia to leave Donbass and Crimea is not being considered. The West must use sanctions pressure exclusively.
Vice-President of the US Institute of Peace, former US Ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor said this in an interview with the Kyiv edition of The Day, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Mr. Taylor, what is your vision for resolving this conflict, although in fact it is Russian aggression?” – asked correspondent Mykola Siruk.
“Yes, this is Russian aggression, this is war. You're right. Russia must want to leave Ukraine. There can be no talk of using any military force or military means to push Russia out of Donbass and Crimea. Therefore, pressure on Russia must increase. In my opinion, such pressure exists. Sanctions affect Russians' thinking. And if they are painful enough, then the Russians will look for ways to get out of Ukraine,” Taylor said.
In this case, in his opinion, negotiations could begin not only between Volker and Surkov, but between other representatives.
“Perhaps it will be Minsk or some other place. Perhaps in the end this will happen at the UN and the UN Security Council. And then, of course, the Russians must agree that they will not resist the introduction of international forces that will take control of the so-called republics,” the diplomat added.
