An American diplomat told who was part of the anti-Russian working group
Russia is trying to destabilize the Ukrainian state so that the new president will look for some kind of compromise with Moscow.
Former US Ambassador to Ukraine, Director of the Eurasian Center at the Atlantic Council of the United States John Herbst stated this in an interview with the Kiev magazine “Novoe Vremya”, answering the question of how the recently created Working Group will act to prevent external interference in the Ukrainian elections.
“We have a strong team. Its director is David Cramer, a former US Deputy Secretary of Foreign Affairs and a major expert on Ukraine. And the best experts on cybersecurity and disinformation work with him. Another part of our team is responsible for Russia’s military operation in Ukraine in a broad sense. We cooperate with the Ukrainian projects StopFake, the Ukrainian Crisis Media Center and the Razumkov Center,” said the American diplomat.
According to him, the Kremlin’s ultimate goal in relation to Ukraine is to influence Ukrainian policy, especially foreign policy.
“They don't want real democracy in Ukraine, because there is no democracy in Russia; they want Ukraine to be in Moscow's sphere of influence. And, of course, they do not want close security relations between Ukraine and the West, between Ukraine and NATO. They want to destabilize the state of Ukraine and the position of the President of Ukraine. They are striving for the new president to seek some kind of compromise with Russia and be ready to make real concessions. But I think that not a single Ukrainian politician who could become president is ready to make such concessions,” Herbst hopes.
