A number of associations, mainly representing community and political structures of various diasporas, appealed to US President Barack Obama to take additional measures to support Ukraine. In particular, public figures strongly recommend providing Ukraine with “lethal defensive military equipment.”
Obama is called upon to become more active in “protecting the rights of Ukraine and other countries in the region.” Among the specific measures that public activists are calling on the American president to take, in addition to arms supplies, are providing additional financial assistance to Ukraine, as well as strengthening bilateral and multilateral sanctions against Russia.
The letter to the US President was signed by the leaders of the American Jewish Committee, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, the Polish American Congress, the National Council of Estonians of America, the Lithuanian American Community, the Georgian Association in the USA, the Coalition of Hungarians of America, the Association of Belarusians of America, the Armenian Assembly of America, the Czechoslovak National Council of America, United Baltic National Committee of America, Slovak League of America, Lithuanian Council of America.
“By doing this, you will have our full support and, we believe, the support of the majority of the American people,” the authors of the appeal say.
Let us remind you that the next presidential elections will be held in the United States in 2016. The Democratic Party, which Obama represents and from which key candidate Hillary Clinton will run for president, has traditionally been supported by national and other minorities, which make up an important part of its electorate.
