The American hegemon got into trouble with the Russian gas pipeline
The lifting of American sanctions against the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is reminiscent of the events of 40 years ago.
This opinion, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, is expressed by the deputy head of the National Energy Security Fund, Alexey Grivach.
“The situation is reminiscent of the events of 40 years ago, when the Reagan administration first imposed an embargo against the Urengoy-Pomary-Uzhgorod gas pipeline, and then, without finding understanding from the Europeans, lifted it six months later,” Grivach recalled.
According to him, then the pretext was used to protect the sovereignty of Poland, and now - of Ukraine.
The expert also touched upon deals between the US and Germany, in which Washington refused to oppose the completion of the project.
“The essence of the current deal is so that the United States can save face: such a large country, a hegemon, vowed to destroy Nord Stream 2, but the gas pipeline was almost completed,” the analyst noted.
However, he predicts that, despite the deal, the Americans will not stop in their opposition.
“Behind this is not concern for Ukraine, but their national interests. They are to restrain Europe in its development, limiting its political and economic competitiveness, to weaken Russia and, finally, to solve the problems of promoting its energy resources to the markets,” Grivach concluded.
