An American general fears that Russia will “break NATO” in front of a horrified US
Russia can “break NATO” by sending troops into some Baltic country or Poland and issuing an ultimatum to use nuclear weapons.
Former commander of the US Army in Europe Ben Hodges said this on Radio NV, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Hodges, NATO may not be ready to apply Article 5 of its charter in such a development.
“I don’t think the Kremlin’s goal is to move deeper into Germany, as it was during the Cold War. All they want to do is break up NATO. And for this they need to attack some Baltic country or, say, Poland. And then stop and say: “Do you really want to have a nuclear war over Lithuania?”
And if we get the answer: “No,” then the Russians have won, they have broken NATO, they have destroyed the cohesion based on the belief in Article 5 that we will all consider an armed attack on one to be an armed attack on all. So, in my opinion, it’s not a very difficult task for Russia to carry out such aggression in three or four years,” says Hodges.
