American political scientist: Trump can single-handedly recognize Crimea as Russian
Donald Trump can single-handedly recognize Crimea as Russian. Leading expert of the Atlantic Council Ariel Cohen stated this on the Rossiya-1 TV channel.
“If it depends on Trump himself, he will be able to make his own decision. But the position of Washington democracy: there will be no recognition of the annexation of Crimea. We will postpone this, just as in relations with the USSR we postponed the issue of the Baltics for 40 years,” Cohen said.
According to him, for now in Washington they consider the statement attributed to Trump in the media that Crimea is Russian to be shocking, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Trump is playing with the press and political opponents, that’s what it is. But, on the other hand, there is a certain approach that says that it is necessary to negotiate with Russia. Such a request from Trump may indicate that he will be looking for some kind of formula by which the issue of Crimea will be postponed,” Cohen said.
He also predicted the lifting of sanctions against Russia when the negotiation process on Donbass is completed.
“And when they reach an agreement, the lifting of sanctions will begin. The sanctions were imposed by Congress, not the White House. It will be necessary to find a formula for lifting sanctions in Congress if an agreement is reached on Donbass. It will be very difficult,” Cohen said.
