American professor: The USA has become the laughing stock of the world
The current US administration was unprepared for the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic crisis.
American University history professor Peter Kuznik, co-author of the acclaimed book and documentary series “The Untold History of the United States,” prepared together with the famous Hollywood director Oliver Stone, spoke about this in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
“Instead of acknowledging the administration's inept handling of this crisis, Donald Trump is engaging in discussions about miracle cures and looking for scapegoats. He has talked a lot about the failures of Barack Obama and the Democrats, but his main target is China. It works with his voters. But this is very dangerous,” Kuznik noted.
“China has not been shy about responding at times, generally acting smarter by resorting to diplomacy of generosity after its mistakes. Beijing supplies aid to countries that need it, including America itself. When the Europeans turned a deaf ear to Italy's pleas, the Chinese sent two million masks and respirators there. When the European Union ignored Serbia's calls for help, China entered the picture, the professor added.
In addition, he says, when the United States stopped its contributions to the WHO budget, China provided financial support, and in early January, China shared genetic information about the virus, which launched the search for a vaccine.
“Alas, the United States got lost somewhere at a time when the world needed help or advice, a united fight against a real common enemy. Donald Trump concentrates on his own interests, largely ceding this space to China, as well as Russia, if it manages to cope with the spread of the virus within the country,” the scientist believes.
“But what will definitely fall victim to the pandemic is the myth of American exceptionalism. Under Donald Trump and Vice President Michael Pence, the country has become the international laughingstock it began to become under George W. Bush. The US claims to moral superiority have always been questionable, but now they look ridiculous,” Kuznik concluded.
