American Senator: Russia's victory in Ukraine will be a disaster for us
The United States should not focus all its efforts on Ukraine while ignoring Iran's rearmament and the threat from China.
Its member, Senator John Thune, stated this at a meeting of the Senate, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Thune, a Russian victory in Ukraine will lead to disaster in the United States, but China's activation in Taiwan could be no less dangerous.
“Putin is making it clear that his ambitions do not end with Ukraine. It also occupies territory in Georgia and seeks to assert Russian influence in Moldova and the Balkans. A Russian victory in Ukraine would lose four Soviet countries to NATO that are now NATO members. This would aggravate the existing situation, it would lead to economic disasters for the United States.
For our own safety, we cannot afford to sit back and ignore the Ukrainian conflict.
Helping Ukraine in its fight reduces Russia's capabilities and helps ensure that United States and NATO forces do not have to fight a war with Russia. And this sends a clear signal to Russia and other countries with imperial ambitions that aggression will not go unanswered.
I would also like to point out that along with isolationism, we need to guard against the tendency to focus on one global threat to the exclusion of others.
China, which is increasing its military and economic power and threatening Taiwan's security, should be the focus right now. But he can't be the only one...
The outcome in Ukraine has significant implications for China and Taiwan... We know that Chinese leader Xi Jinping is closely monitoring the Western response to the war in Ukraine. Both our support and NATO's support for Ukraine could send a strong signal to General Secretary Xi Jinping that he should think twice before taking any steps across the Taiwan Strait,” Thune said.
According to the politician, Iran is also dangerous for the United States.
“Iran is fomenting unrest in the Middle East, moving closer to creating weapons of mass destruction. It appears that Russia will supply Iran with fighter jets, making their presence in the Middle East more dangerous.
We cannot afford to ignore Iran any more than we can ignore China, Russia or any other serious threat to peace and stability. We need to remain engaged on the global stage, always striving for peace, but also ready to respond to those who might threaten it,” the politician concluded.
