Amnesty International condemns Latvia for double standards regarding refugees
Latvia mistreated migrants entering the country from Belarus, and even abused people by holding them in the forest for several months.
The international human rights organization Amnesty International announced this on its Twitter.
Amnesty International writes that for about a year Latvia has been taking various measures to prevent Middle Eastern migrants from Belarus from entering the country. According to the Latvian side, the organization writes, the movement of these people towards Latvia was purposefully organized by the Belarusian authorities.
The organization notes that in Latvia's opinion, according to international law, these people should seek asylum in the first safe country where they find themselves - in Belarus.
The organization notes that Latvia plans to extend the emergency situation on the eastern border until November, and this government approach threatens people's ability to apply for asylum.
Amnesty International notes that Latvia has accepted more than 34 thousand Ukrainian refugees, but at the same time leaves refugees from Iraq and Afghanistan, including children, in the forest.
People were denied asylum and offered only return to their country as an alternative, and many refugees also faced threats of violence from Latvians.
