Amnesty International criticized Ukraine for pandering to the far right
Most of the crimes committed by right-wing radical groups were not properly investigated by law enforcement agencies, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was stated by the human rights organization Amnesty International, commenting on the Nazi attack on a Roma camp near Lviv.
“In a number of cases monitored by Amnesty International, only the attack on the Equality Festival in Zaporozhye in August 2017 came to court. 30 other attacks did not even make it past the initial complaint registration stage. In addition, in the process of investigating hate crimes, the authorities usually ignore the discriminatory motives of the crimes,” human rights activists said.
The organization said that in 2017 and 2018 there was a sharp increase in the level of violence and the number of hate crimes in Ukraine committed by members of radical groups.
“Following the occupation and annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 and the conflict with pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian society has become polarized. Radical groups are using this tense atmosphere to promote and carry out acts of hatred and discrimination,” Amnesty International noted.
The organization called on the authorities to "carefully and persistently continue the investigation, make it as transparent as possible and pay special attention to the discriminatory motives of the crimes, and not ignore them, as happened in the past."
Let us recall that the attack on the Roma camp on the outskirts of Lvov occurred late in the evening of June 23, as a result of which one person was killed and three were wounded.
Chairman of the National Police of Ukraine Sergei Knyazev said that the number of suspects in the attack has reached 14 and some of them have been taken into custody.
