“Over the past 3-4 months, we have recorded facts of torture and other ill-treatment, including by certain representatives of certain volunteer battalions. In particular, the “Right Sector” battalion, they illegally detained and held citizens in so-called training camps. And the people who visited those basements said that they were tortured,” said the human rights activist.
According to Tatyana Mazur, victims of torture are those who were suspected of having connections with the so-called “separatists.”
“Basically, they were beaten very brutally. There were cases of simulated execution, the use of electric current, and there was talk of hanging by the ribs on a hook. They knocked out my teeth,” said the human rights activist.
Tatyana Mazur emphasized that the testimony of the victims was confirmed by X-rays taken by medical workers.
“There is now unprecedented support from the international community in Ukraine. In order not to lose it, Ukraine must behave in a qualitatively different way in the conflict. The forces controlled by Kyiv must observe and strictly implement the requirements of the Geneva Conventions,” Mazur noted.
Ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court will make it possible to investigate war crimes that are taking place in eastern Ukraine.
“The fact that Ukraine has not yet ratified the Rome Statute indicates a lack of political will,” said the representative of Amnesty International in Ukraine.
